Have you ever thought about how nature can transform education? At my new Alternative Provision Farm School, I believe that learning should happen in a way that connects young people with the environment. This unique approach not only enhances academic skills but also fosters personal growth and social development.
In this blog post, I will explore what makes my farm school special, the benefits of outdoor learning, and how I aim to create a nurturing environment for all young people.
What is an Alternative Provision Farm School?
Active Achievers is a unique educational setting in Camborne, Cornwall, designed for young people who may struggle in traditional school environments. These young people often face challenges that make conventional learning difficult. My farm school provides a supportive space where they can thrive.
Here, young people engage in hands-on activities related to basic farming, gardening, and animal care. This practical approach helps them develop essential life skills while also improving their academic performance.
The Benefits of Outdoor Learning
Outdoor learning has numerous benefits for young people. Here are some key advantages:
Improved Mental Health: Spending time in nature can reduce stress and anxiety. Young people often feel more relaxed and focused when they are outdoors.
Enhanced Social Skills: Working together on farm tasks encourages teamwork and communication. Young people learn to collaborate and build friendships.
Increased Engagement: Hands-on activities capture young people's interest. They are more likely to participate and enjoy learning when it involves real-life experiences.
Development of Responsibility: Caring for animals and plants teaches young people about responsibility. They learn the importance of commitment and nurturing.
Connection to Nature: Understanding where food comes from fosters a sense of respect for the environment. Young people develop a deeper appreciation for nature and sustainability.
Our Curriculum
At Active Achievers, I have designed activities that integrates academic subjects with practical farm activities. Here are some examples of what Young people can expect:
Science: Young people learn about biology through hands-on experiences with plants and animals. They can observe life cycles, ecosystems, and the importance of biodiversity.
Maths: Farm activities provide real-world applications for math skills. Young people can measure land, calculate feed amounts, and track growth rates.
Literacy: Writing and reading activities are incorporated into farm tasks. Young people may keep diaries about their experiences or read books related to farming and nature.
Art: Creativity flourishes in our outdoor setting. Young people can create art inspired by nature, using materials found on the farm.
A Day in the Life at Active Achievers
Imagine a typical day at Active Achievers Farm School. Young people arrive in the morning, greeted by the sounds of nature. They start their day with a group meeting, discussing the tasks ahead.
Afterwards, young people may care for animals, learning about their needs and behaviors. This hands-on experience helps them develop empathy and responsibility.
Later, they might head to the garden to plant seeds. This activity not only teaches them about gardening but also allows them to work together and share ideas.
In the afternoon, they might gather for a literacy session, where they write about their experiences or take part in a number of activities designed to engage and build self-esteem and confidence.
Each day is filled with opportunities for learning, growth, and connection.
Supporting Young People with Diverse Needs
Active Achievers is designed to support young people with various needs. I understand that each young people is unique and may require different approaches to learning.
With over 20 years of experience Sally is trained to provide individualised support. She will work closely with the young people to identify their strengths and areas for improvement. This personalised approach will help them build confidence and achieve their goals.
Active Achievers can work not only schools but also collaborate with parents and caregivers to ensure that young people receive the support they need both at school and at home.
Community Involvement
Community involvement is a vital part of Active Achievers. Sally believes that education extends beyond the classroom and into the community.
Sally works at Create CIC in Camborne teaching ceramic classes as an after school club and silver jewellery and glass workshops. There are a number of events events held at Create CIC that help foster a sense of belonging and connection.
Sustainability and Environmental Awareness
At Active Achievers, I prioritise sustainability and environmental awareness. I teach students about the importance of caring for the planet and using resources wisely.
Young people learn about organic farming practices, composting, and recycling. They understand the impact of their actions on the environment and how they can contribute to a more sustainable future.
By instilling these values, I hope to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.
Join Me on This Journey
I invite you to join me on this exciting journey of learning and growth. Active Achievers is more than just a place to learn; it is a community where young people can thrive.
If you know a young person who could benefit from my program, I encourage you to reach out. Together, we can create a supportive environment that fosters success and personal development.
The Future of Education
As I look to the future, I believe that alternative education models like mine will play a crucial role in shaping the next generation.
By embracing outdoor learning and hands-on experiences, we can create a more inclusive and effective educational system. Active Achievers is just one example of how we can innovate and adapt to meet the needs of all young people.
I am excited about the possibilities ahead and look forward to continuing this journey with my young people, families, and community.

In conclusion, Active Achievers is a place where education meets nature. I am committed to providing a nurturing environment that supports young people's academic and personal growth. Together, we can cultivate a brighter future for all learners.
